On August 7, 2005, Phyllis Gagliardo and her father Joseph Gagliardo opened Scrubs N Duds in a tiny 500-square-foot space on 9th Street and 5th Avenue North in St. Petersburg, FL. Phyllis had spent 20 years working in the healthcare field and knew exactly what healthcare professionals needed - and how hard it was to find it all in one place. Her father had spent 15 years as a NYPD police officer and 2 decades owning restaurants in Pinellas County. What started as a father/daughter dream became one of Tampa Bay's most trusted woman-owned small businesses.
In April 2007, the business had grown enough to move to a larger home on 4th Street North, and that July, scrubsnduds.com launched its online store. In March 2011, Phyllis's sister Elizabeth joined the team, and for years the three of them ran the shop together - so happily they were almost ashamed to call it work.
In November 2020, the family lost Joseph. It was a profound loss - for the family and for the business he helped build. Elizabeth returned to the corporate world, and Phyllis's best friend Rita stepped in as Store Manager. Phyllis and Rita have been friends since they were about 18 years old, having worked together at Eckerd Drugs at Rutland Shopping Center - a St Pete landmark from decades ago. They pick right back up where they left off, every single day.
On December 31, 2020, Phyllis adopted Giuseppe - a lilac French Bulldog who immediately became the official mascot of Scrubs N Duds. You'll find him relaxing near the front door when you visit. In 2025 Joann joined the team and fit in so naturally that Phyllis says she feels like the missing piece they had been searching for.
Today, Scrubs N Duds is 2,500 square feet of carefully curated scrubs, chefwear, shoes, accessories, and in-house embroidery- with four private dressing rooms with elegant chandelier fans, and a team of Scrub Stylists who genuinely love what they do. We carry 22 premium lines. We have been embroidering in-house since 2012 operating two on-site machines. We have been outfitting Tampa Bay healthcare and professional facilities with managed uniform programs since 2007. Through it all, one thing hasn't change - we believe the best way to serve healthcare professionals is to treat them like family.
"We will always work our hardest to outfit you and your office in the best uniforms for your body and your budget. If we don't have what you need, we will do our best to order it for you. Many of our customers have become some of our closest friends. Giuseppe and the whole Scrubs N Duds family look forward to adding you to ours!" - Phyllis A. Gagliardo
After two decades working in the healthcare field, Phyllis knew it was time to chart a new course - one that combined her passion for the industry with her entrepreneurial spirit. In 2005, she opened Scrubs N Duds, and it turned out to be one of the best decisions she ever made.
What makes Scrubs N Duds truly special is the heart behind it. Built as a family business from the very beginning, Phyllis has had the privelege of partnering wih her father, working side by side with her sister, and sharing the journey with her oldest and dearest friend. For her, that kind of partnership isn't just good business - it's a gift.
Over the years, the customers who walked through the doors have become something far more than clients. The've become friends, and that community is something Phyllis holds close.
The business has grown alongside her family too. When Scrubs N Duds first opened its doors, her son was just nine years old, riding his bike to deliver uniforms around the neighborhood. Today he is 31 with a beautiful family of his own - and a new baby on the way. Watching both her business and her family flourish side be side has been nothing short of a blessing.
They say when you love what you do, you never work a day in your life. For Phyllis, that's not just a saying - it's simply the truth.
Rita is passionate and people-driven with five years of experience with Scrubs N Duds. Her background spans roles as a pharmacy technician, preschool director, and teacher - a journey that reflects a lifelong dedication to caring for others. As a mother and cargiver to her elderly mom, Rita brings a deep understanding of compassion, patience, and resilience to everything she does.
That same spirit carries into the fitting room. Rita takes a personalized, hands-on approach to helping every customer find scrubs that fit well, feel comfortable, and look great - because she knows what you wear affects how you show up.
Her goal is simple; to make sure every customer leaves feeling confident and ready for the day ahead. Whether someone is just starting out in their career or simply looking to refresh their work wardrobe, Rita is there to offer honest guidance and a genuinely welcoming experience.
